Gump Dump: Still smarting from Saturday, the Tide has to turn its focus to the hated Vols

How DeBoer manages this loss with a hated rival on deck will tell us if he’s the right man. That starts with Keelon Russell.

Rejoice, for this is the day that we Gump. I know Saturday night sucked, and for some of us, it’s still lingering. But you have to shake that off. There’s a new opponent this week, and it’s one that should have your blood pumping: Tennessee Hate Week is upon us.

Tennessee Hate Week: To Hell with Tennessee: Our Declaration of War

We’re gonna’ let our boy, Josh, get us hyped first…

Josh Ford is a literal psychopath, broken arm no problem still becomes a tone setter. Absolute unit.

James Madison, who just entered FBS play four years ago, has spent the better part of its seasons bullying the absolute hell out of Sun Belt teams. The needed a new challenge, and they finally get one: the Dukes are bolting for the wildest conference in the country: the AAC.

We’ll see if the 800-pound gorilla can still rule the roost when it faces the likes of Memphis, UTSA, Tulane, North Texas and others on a weekly basis. I’m pretty sure they won’t be covering 18 of 20 spreads though as a favorite, as they did during one stretch of Fun Belt play.

This is a good move, makes a lot of sense, and is better for the sport.

My boy Balloons has his Charting piece up over at RBR. In large part they show what we lamented yesterday in The Autopsy: Alabama was sooooo close. But sometimes it just really do be like that — the ball bounces on you funny. In the case of the Dawgs, half a dozen f’n times.

Welp. I was there with you at the end: frustrated that such a close game came down to a bad call (or three). It’s hard to see the rest of the game behind that no-call PI, non-call on targeting, plus several other opportunities that bounced (sometimes literally) the Dawg’s way.

Sometimes when we come out of a game like this, these charts make it feel obvious: I half expected to see higher efficiencies and metrics across the board for the Tide … one of those “we played better, but still lost on the bounces” games. They happen (and it usually makes for an interesting column).

10 “so close” graphs from the Georgia game
10 “so close” graphs from the Georgia game

Metrics suggest Alabama’s loss to Georgia was a dead-even fight featuring great rushing but a struggling pass game.

Roll 'Bama Roll

Russell had his first “meh” outing finally. He knows it, and he knows he has to get better — for his own sake and the goals of this team. How Grubb and DeBoer handle him, and how this team bounce back from that painful, controversial loss, will tell us about Keelon’s character, the headspace of this team, and whether KDB is even the right man for the job. This is as big a TSIO game for those reasons as I can recall:

Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell is his toughest critique. The first-year starter — who was 16-of-30 (53%) for 185 yards with a touchdown and a fumble, while adding nine carries for 41 yards — made that clear following the Crimson Tide’s 20-17 loss to Georgia on Saturday.

“I gotta execute at a higher level,” he told the media on Saturday night. (I) did not play my best game tonight. Countless, you know, throws that I missed, and just gotta do better. I made a couple good plays, but at the same time, you know, I’m gonna critique myself. You know, at max potential, I gotta play better as a quarterback. I gotta, you know, do a better job with you know, commanding the offense and you know taking over my way and just doing my job better.”

The out-of-position-safety-playing-corner ,and sudden headcase, Dijon Lee, issued an apology last night. Absent from the mea culpa was one to the Bulldogs, as well as generally sucking at anything that does not involve dropping back into zone.

Alabama has a Dijon Lee problem independent of trying to big-dick it: he simply cannot play man and is lost in match-coverage. That must be sorted out sooner rather than later.

Alabama is getting fleeced by the Swoosh. I have it on good authority from #sauces, that there is a helluva lot of gray-zone money flooding into UA athletics from Nike (notably to the Hoops team), but this is still a crappy deal for the Tide. It’s time to renegotiate.

UGA currently gets paid less than 4 mil a year & 13% retail royalties.

Time to go back to the negotiating table, boys @Brooks_UGA https://t.co/JWnIVUDDyV

— Pat 🐺 (@CFB_Pat) October 9, 2026

Because it’s Alabama and a crippling injury to a critical player is required in every sport, #Team32 (I think?) has already lost one this season: It’s speculated Johnson has an ACL, and if that’s the case, it’s far too late to try and rehab with pitchers and catchers reporting in January, and their season beginning the first week or so of February.

It takes 6-9 months to heal and rehab following ACL surgery. But for women, it’s even longer: often a calendar year. Their knees bend inwards because of hip rotation, and it places extra strain on the ACL, thus a longer recovery time. And all of that is independent of women healing slower in general than men…if they can heal from ACLs at all.

Females less likely to heal from ACL injuries than males | Penn State University
Females less likely to heal from ACL injuries than males | Penn State University

Injuries of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), located in the knee, are typically thought to be caused by acute traumatic events, such as sudden twists. Led by Penn State researchers, new work analyzing an animal model of ACLs suggests that such injuries can also occur as a result of chronic overuse, specifically due to a reduced ability to repair microtraumas associated with overuse. Importantly, the team said, females also are less able to heal from these microtraumas than males, which may explain why females are two to eight times more likely to tear their ACL ligaments than males.

Lauren Johnson’s knee was injured at the first base bag running out an infield hit. Had to be helped off the field. Didn’t look good. Prayers up.

Let’s hope it’s not as bad as is rumored. Damn.

We’re still reasonably upbeat about the Tide’s fortunes. Our friends at BamaHammer aren’t quite so sanguine. They’ve posted an article giving reasons Alabama can run the table…and cannot. Huh? Outside of a thorny one in LSU, against a talented Tiger team in search of a new Super Bowl and looking to play spoiler, Alabama should be able to clear the next half-dozen games.

But, honestly, as badly as Lane wants to beat the Tide, he has a lot more on his plate at the moment…like disarming the peasants with pitchforks that emerged following another bad loss. I’ll take my chances with this group over whatever it is he’s assembled in Baton Rouge:

CAN’T: All in all, finishing 11-1 should be Alabama’s ultimate goal as a team moving forward, as it would put the Tide in a strong position to represent the SEC in competing for a conference championship and potentially earn a rematch with Georgia. But even if Alabama were to stumble and finish 10-2, it wouldn’t necessarily mean the sky is falling. The Tide could still be in the mix for a College Football Playoff berth, though that would depend on how the rest of the Power Four conferences unfold.

That’s what makes this stretch so important. Alabama can either use its first defeat as the true wake-up call that fuels a midseason surge or allow it to become the warning sign in 2026 that the team failed to heed. The difference will come down to whether DeBoer’s team is built for it or not.

4 honest reasons why Alabama can/can't run the table after falling to Georgia

Bama Hammer

I’ve already looked at the schedules: If Alabama wins out, the Tide rematch with UGA in Atlanta. The picture really is that clear.

And I think they will….

Last year, KenPom et al took a dim view of Tide Hoops entering the season. This year, they’ve swung wildly the other way: 9th overall. It’s funny, because Dauster and the guys at Field of 68 have ‘Bama at 8th…in the conference.

KenPom’s preseason ratings have been released for the 2026-27 college basketball season.

I know some folks at Fo68 who did not attend their DARE classes, if you think Bama is 8th in a power poll.

For what year? Not in the last half decade.

Back in June, we wrote that Alabama had done more than anyone in the country relative to its recruiting and NIL availability. Despite some pushback, we now have empirical proof that not only is that the case, it is the case by a decent little margin:

Who's getting the most out of their recruiting talent? 📊

Through Week 6, Boise State, USC, and Notre Dame are outperforming the offensive talent trend. Oregon, Colorado, and Washington State are falling short. pic.twitter.com/auRP9D1TqH

— Bill Radjewski | CollegeFootballData.com (@CFB_Data) October 12, 2026

I ordinarily enjoy Bama Central’s analysis. But I think they’re off the mark on this one: Bama’s defense being unable to get off the field on third down. The Tide and Dawgs were almost identical in third down conversions. You could write this same story about Georgia. It wasn’t absurd or anything, nearing 50% for both teams. It just felt a lot worse at the time.

Wommack’s players responded by forcing six turnovers over the next two games, shutting down South Carolina and Mississippi State in consecutive weeks and reminding the nation that this defense is uber-talented and has shown flashes of elite play.

But those flashes were few and far between on Saturday, as the Crimson Tide fell 20-17 to Georgia at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Whatever positives there were for a defense that, to be fair, did hold the Bulldogs to less than half of their average point total against SEC opponents this year were entirely overshadowed by the negatives, which often came on third down.

Georgia converted on seven of its 13 third downs, with an average distance of 7.7 yards needed to move the chains. In this article, we’ll look at some of those conversions, as well as a few of the defense’s other blunders, as we try to figure out if Wommack’s statement holds any water.

And people call me the NegaGump. SMDH.

Still, it’s one more reason I’m still so pissed at Ryan Grubb: The Tide was neck and neck with UGA in RTDB when he bailed on it. Bama should and could have had the Bulldogs helplessly sucking wind the fourth quarter instead of it being the Tide. I can’t wait to see the back of his shirt when Washington comes calling in December to hire him. That was indefensible playcalling.

And, finally, your moment of levity. This is a woman whose rallying cry we can all get behind: It’s about the titties.

Whew, that was a lot to crank out over 24 hours:

  • Game recap,
  • a super-fat Meltdown,
  • a declaration of war for Tennessee hate week,
  • ICYMI,
  • and now a Gump Dump.

So, you won’t see us post again until tomorrow when we hit you back with the Meltdown Part Two among other #content. But you’ve got a lot of catching up to day.

Until then, you folks have a great morning, thanks for reading, and take care.

Though this is true, Grubb needs to dial up plays that put Keelon, and the offense, in a better position. Long-ass developing plays against UGA was a recipe for disaster.

I think 11-1 vs 9-3 will greatly depend on how Keelon responds – I feel like we’ve watched him grow up in real-time in the FSU & USC games; I’m optimistic he will do the work and respond appropriately. Lee has been a liability in coverage all season.. not sure what the answer is, but I know it isn’t more snaps in man coverage as a CB.

The Tide was neck and neck with UGA in RTDB when he bailed on it.

The most egregious instance IMO was 3-2 from the UGA 21 (?) on our first possession of the second half. Just run the ball and convert a first down! If we answer UGA’s TD out of the locker with a TD of our own, it completely shifts the momentum. Instead we get an incomplete pass and settle for a game-tying FG, and Georgia holds all of the momentum.

Not gonna lie, I kind of felt we were fucked in the long run at that point. No matter how great the defense played, how hard Russell tried – Grubb would find a way to LOSE the fucking game.
